IPC STANDARDS FOR PCB DESIGN

IPC standards, the results of industry consensus and collaboration, are respected throughout the whole world.

Using IPC standards allows manufacturers, customers and suppliers to speak the same language.

Their wide acceptance, and your company's incorporation of the standards into your manufacturing processes, can help grow your business, adding new customers while satisfying your current customer base.

DESIGN
 Guidelines
IPC-2220 Series is a compendium of 5 documents replacing IPC-D-275 and IPC-D-249. It includes all of IPC current design standards. Available separately they now offer a more specific and comprehensive guide.
Areas covered by IPC-2220 include requirements for organic PCB's and multichip modules, material considerations & board configurations and PC card form factors.

As a designer considering physical design principles, customer reliability requirements and surface mount and high speed logic design IPC-M-106 Technology Reference for Design Manual provides an excellent compilation of standards essential to your library.

Implementing BGA's and fine pitch BGA's technology presents some unique challengesfor design, assembly, inspection and repair personnel. IPC-7095 Design and Assembly Process Implementation for BGAs (Preview Table of Contents 64Kb)

 Land Patterns
IPC-7351 Generic Requirements for Surface Mount Land Pattern and Design Standard has replaced IPC-SM-782. It covers land pattern design for all types of passive and active components, including resistors, capacitors, MELFs, SSOPs, TSSOPs, QFPs, BGAs, QFNs and SONs. The standard provides an intelligent land pattern naming convention, zero component rotations for CAD systems, and a set of three separate land pattern geometries for each component that allows the user to select a land pattern based on desired component density. Also includes updates to existing sections addressing land pattern guidelines for wave or reflow soldering, via location guidelines, fiducials and courtyard boundaries. IPC-7351 includes both the standard and a IPC-7351 land pattern viewer on CD-ROM. Preview IPC-7351 (Table of Contents 47Kb).

IPC-7351 Land Pattern Viewer and Tools
IPC-7351 is supplemented by a suite of software tools composed of land pattern viewers, calculators and generators for the creation of new part libraries. The IPC-7351 Land Pattern Viewer is a shareware program that allows users to view component and land pattern dimensional data in tabular form as well as graphical images that illustrate how a component is attached to the land pattern on the board. Download the latest IPC-7351 Land Pattern Viewer here (Version 2-502 - 9Mb zip file).

IPC-7351 Land Pattern Viewer Usage
Once installed, select the “Users Guide” tool bar button located on the main interface screen for the IPC-7351 LP Viewer. This .pdf document helps in familiarizing the user with the Viewer by providing detailed information on the following:
  • Software Installation
  • Setting up User Preferences
  • Operating the Search Library Menu
  • Updating Parts Library Files
IPC-7351 Land Pattern Updates
The IPC-7351 Land Pattern Viewer relies on library files for component and land pattern dimensional data. The extension for the library files is <.p>. These .p files provide the raw dimensional data necessary for the software to display components and land patterns in graphical forum. .p files also contain parts attributes. Attributes hold vital statistical and descriptive data that every land pattern needs so other users can quickly identify the component characteristics. Attributes help organize data used to search for existing library parts. Detailed descriptions of how to utilize attributes can be found by selecting the “Users Guide” tool bar button located on the main interface screen for the IPC-7351 LP Viewer. As new component families are standardized by the industry, new .p library files will be made available to users of the IPC-7351 Land Pattern Viewer.

IPC-7351 Land Pattern Naming Convention
The IPC-7351 standard provides an intelligent land pattern naming convention that aids in communication between engineering, design and manufacturing. Containing information on attributes such as component family, pin pitch, pin quantity and lead span, the convention also provides for enhanced search capabilities within the IPC-7351 Land Pattern Viewer. Download the latest copy of the IPC-7351 Land Pattern Naming Convention here (Table of Contents 38Kb).
